Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
