Social Media Influencers Driving Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with numerous of participants share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Material Elimination

According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of users, populated with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.

After moments of entering one community, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly moderated dangerous content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Cautions

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious health risks”.
