Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
